Great Guy Fawkes Day March

Written by admin on November 6th, 2011

Central Nebraska Peace Workers, a chapter of Nebraskans for Peace, with MoveOn.org organized a march in Grand Island on Guy Fawkes day, November 5, 2011. Veteran’s for Peace, Green Party members, and Democrats from Hall and Dawson Counties made an appearance at the event too. We met about 10:30 a.m. at Pioneer Park in Grand Island, NE. Got ready, made a few X-tra signs, and began our “march” to Wells Fargo Bank and last to Adrian Smith’s office in that city. We were greeted with honks and thumbs-up signals by many, even a man in a Sherriff’s vehicle.. After many met for coffee, lunch and debriefing. Unfortunately, I got myself lost and missed that part of a good day. However; it was GREAT to support Occupy WallStreet and to be active for change.

Keystone XL Pipeline: No Benefit?

Written by admin on September 27th, 2011

We all know about the environmental impact that the Keystone XL Pipeline will have, but too many Mid-Westerners don’t realize that there will be little or no benefit from it.

•Keystone XL is an export pipeline. According to presentations to investors, Gulf Coast refiners plan to refine the cheap Canadian crude supplied by the pipeline into diesel and other products for export to Europe and Latin America. Proceeds from these exports are earned tax-free. Most of the fuel refined from the pipeline’s heavy crude oil will never reach U.S. drivers’ tanks.

It is EveryOne’s Issue

The following clip is Wisconsin farmer Tony Shultz’ entire speech given at the Wisconsin protests.  He is a small independent farmer with only 120 acres. He gives a very good explanation of why the attack on unions is an attack on farmers too.

Please listen to what he has to say and think about this:  Nebraska also has anti-union/anti-collective bargaining bills proposed this session. (LR29CA)  (LB664)

Labor Unions have brought us so much.  Here are a few:
Safer working conditions
Fair and minimum wages
Child labor laws
40 hour work week (week-ends!)
Fight discrimination in the workplace
JUST cause to fire a worker
Paid Vacations, Pensions, & Sick Leave
All of us have benefited whether or not we are members of a union.
